Otter Tail County’s Story

Relax, Unwind and Enjoy. That's what Otter Tail County is all about.

The aptly named Otter Tail County is a haven of wildlife, scenery buffs and outdoorsy types of every age, shape, color and purpose. Located in the enviable north central Minnesota lake region, Otter Lake County is home to over 1,000 lakes and their resident walleye, northern pike, muskie, large and small mouth bass, black crappie and bluegills.

Pioneer history abounds in Otter Tail County. Native Americans used the area for hunting and fishing and had permanent dwelling sites. Two Native American tribes were in constant conflict. The Dakota (Sioux) were being pushed from their home area by the Ojibwa (Chippewa) during the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. Burial mounds and artifacts can still be found. Some of the oldest remains of Native Americans were found near Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. The remains, nicknamed Minnesota Girl, were dated at about 11,000 B.C.

The first explorers through this area about 1750 were French and English fur traders. The area served an inland water route between Canada, Hudson Bay and the lower Mississippi. The traders met with a band of Indians on the shore of "Lac de la Queue de la Outer", which translates roughly to the Lake of the Otters Tail, a name which derives from the sand bar shaped like an otter's tail where the Otter Tail River enters Otter Tail Lake (on the North East end of the lake). Over two centuries later, the otter's tail sand bar is still there.

Trading posts were established on the Leaf Lakes and Otter Tail Lake. In the late 1800’s, most of the towns were built along the railroad lines. Lumber and agriculture were the major industries in the county at that time. The pine and hardwood forests, transportation system, and markets were instrumental in the development of Fergus Falls into a lumber center. In 1870, the population of the county was about 2,000. At that time the principal languages spoken in the county were Norwegian, Swedish, German, and English.

Otter Tail County was established in March 1858 by a legislative act. It was organized in 1868. The original county seat was Ottertail City. Meanwhile, the people of Fergus Falls organized a new county named Holcomb. In 1872, a legislative act abolished Holcomb County, added additional townships to the west, and established Fergus Falls as the county seat of Otter Tail County. Today, there are 62 townships in the county. The county is named for Otter Tail Lake and the Otter Tail River.

Today, Otter Tail County is known for four-season fun. Spring is announced by the ice breaking on the county's 1,000 lakes. Summer is made for family fun, making a perfect time to enjoy the water. Whatever your passion - fishing, boating, skiing, sunbathing - you could try a new lake or beach every day and not tour all of the lakes in one summer. Area golf courses are plentiful and feature lush greens and fairways with sporty layouts to test your golfing abilities. Otter Tail Country has many other summer events to enjoy including art and craft fairs, craft and antique shops, community festivals, county fairs, state and county parks, flea markets, historical sites and museums. Fall in North-Central Minnesota is a time of breathtaking beauty. The county's forests explode with rich shades of gold, orange and red. Hikers and bikers will find a wonderful variety of birds and wildlife to view. And winter offers recreational opportunities every outdoor afficionado can appreciate.. Fish houses dot the snow and ice covered lakes as anglers try to catch the "big one". Many miles of groomed cross-country ski trails meander through the woodlands. Snowmobile trails hum with excitement with the exploration of Otter Tail Country in full swing.
